Drones against Tsetse in Africa

IAEA – Drones for Sterile Insect Technique (SIT)

Drones Against Tsetse is an initiative to control trypanosomosis in Africa. Trypanosomosis, or commonly known as the sleeping sickness, is transmitted by Tsetse flies, causing large damages and life losses.

Sterile Insect Technique (SIT)

It consists of the release of sterile male insects in zones in which indigenous population level of flies must be controlled. SIT requires the weekly liberation of an average 100 sterile males per square kilometer.

Autonomous release of pods

The pods under the wings, developed at Embention, include a freezing system so flies can be stored at controlled temperatures in small biodegradable boxes that are freed at desired intervals for each area.

A complete drone system for flies dispersion

Missions are designed according to data from prediction distribution models, such as MAXNET and satellite imagery (MODIS). This project is in collaboration with IAEA, the Ethiopian Ministry of Livestock and FAO.
